Egypt had no lapis of its own. It came thousands of kilometres from the mountains of Badakhshan, in today's Afghanistan, and was set into the gold of royal jewellery, Tutankhamun's funerary mask among them.
The stone that seals.
Carnelian was a favourite of Greek and Roman gem engravers. Cut as an intaglio and set in a signet ring, it pressed a name or an emblem into wax, the wearer's mark on the world.
Older than writing.
More than five thousand years ago, the Liangzhu culture carved nephrite jade into the bi disc and the cong, objects of ritual buried with the honoured dead.
Cleopatra's green.
The emerald mines of Egypt's Eastern Desert were worked in Ptolemaic and Roman times, and have long been known as Cleopatra's Mines.
